Quem foi Vieira da Silva:

Maria Helena Vieira da Silva (1908-1994), unique daughter of a family of the upper bourgeoisie, studied drawing, painting and sculpture. In 1928 she left for Paris where she attended sculpture classes at the Academy of the Great Chaumière. It is in this place that she knows Arpad Szenes, in 1929, with whom she will marry in 1930.

In 1931, the two artists began their technique of engraving, in Atelier 17 in Hayter, place where they lived with the surrealists. Vieira da Silva reveals, since the beginning, special attention to space and depth.

The 50’s brings Vieira da Silva countless important exhibitions in France and abroad. In 1956, Vieira da Silva and Szenes naturalized French, and during the 60’s the French state acquired their work and gave them several awards. Vieira da Silva has accumulated several international prizes and, since 1958 are organized retrospective of her work, all over Europe.

In 1983, when she is considered one of the most important European painters of the second half of the 20th century, Vieira da Silva is invited by the Lisbon Subway to decorate the “Cidade Universitária” metro station. In 1990, in Lisbon, the Arpad-Szenes Vieira da Silva Foundation was created, but the artist dies without attending the inauguration of her museum.
