Who was Amália Rodrigues:

Amália da Piedade Rodrigues (1920-1999) was a Portuguese Fado (Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO) singer and actress, considered the ultimate example of fado, acclaimed as the voice of Portugal and one of the most brilliant female singers of the 20th century.

She reveals her vocation as a singer, from an early age, when she sings popular songs and known tangos. In 1936, when integrating the Popular March of Alcantara, becomes known due to the special tone of her voice. In 1940, she made his debut in “Teatro de Revista” (Popular theatrical genre characterized by social and political satire). In 1943, she performed for the first time outside of Portugal, in Madrid and, in 1947, also made her film debut.

Due to the symbolism that the musical genre Fado has in the Portuguese culture, it has become one of the most eminent ambassadors of the country in the world. She introduced the innovation of singing poems by great consecrated Portuguese authors.

During her life, 170 albums were published with her name and sold more than 30 million copies worldwide. On the date of her death, national mourning was decreed for three days and hundreds of thousands of people were present at her funeral. Two years later, her body was transferred to the National Pantheon of the Church of Santa Engrácia, in Lisbon.
